Tips for the New Music Producer

Alright, I had someone come up to me a few weeks ago when I was Djing. They were asking me questions about how I create my music.   At first, I couldn't decide what to suggest as there are so many available choices. However, after thinking about it for a few days. I came up with these thoughts for a new producer. These are just my opinions.

Don’t focus on equipment. It all does the same stuff. It's your approach and style that matter.

Be careful who you take advice from, there are many people out there claiming to experts. Listen to the people that have been where you want to go or at least have had some releases under their belt.

Focus on the ideas. With so many tools today, everyone can make decent sounding tracks. I think it will continue to be easier for anyone to make music.

Remember, sound and mastering engineers are your friends. If you have a great track and labels are interested. It can pay off to work with experts to let it reach its full potential. Note, it can hard to recoup costs in today’s world of pay per stream. But that is ok, sometimes the art needs the attention.

Just get a laptop. You can take them anywhere. You can test out a million programs and find the DAW you like. Yes, analog gear is great. Modular synths are awesome but it is not where I would start in today's world. If you get a Mac it comes with Gargeband. People look down on that program, however, it does much more than the $2000 I spent on my setup back in 2000.
